LATCH System Tips for Parents | Mission, TX

LATCH System Tips | Mission, TX

If you are a parent whose child still uses a car seat, we highly recommend purchasing a new Chevrolet with the LATCH system. LATCH stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren and can be a safer alternative for buckling in car seats. Several vehicles on our lot at family-owned Bert Ogden Chevrolet in Mission, Texas, have the LATCH system, so you can check it out in person — just bring your mask and be ready to stay socially distant, as we follow all CDC guidelines at our dealership.

If you are a new parent or just new to the LATCH system in general, we recommend reviewing these pointers for using the system:

  • Always check the owner’s manual and the car seat manual to make sure the LATCH system is a good fit. The LATCH system does have a weight limit that varies by manufacturer. If your child’s weight plus the weight of the car seat surpasses that limit, do not use the LATCH system; instead, use the traditional seat belt method to buckle in the seat.
  • Do not use a single LATCH system to buckle in multiple car seats. Each car seat requires its own LATCH tethers and anchors.
  • If you are having trouble finding the tethers and anchors, you may need to reach behind the upholstery. Look for the LATCH system symbol to ensure you have found the right anchors and tethers.
  • The top tether strap is important when using a forward-facing car seat, as this can minimize forward head movement should you get in a collision.
  • To help confirm that you have installed the car seat properly, get it inspected by a trained car seat installation technician. Visit org for a list of inspection stations and resources.
