Use max cool
No really, trust us. You might think that this does nothing but burn through your fuel more quickly — blasting the coldest air possible. But in reality, your vehicle’s air conditioner only creates one temperature of cold air, and it’s the temp that’s on the max cool setting. If you set it to be slightly warmer than that, the system is still creating that coldest of cold air and then warming it up, which takes even more energy.
Instead, always blast the max AC. You can regulate the temperature instead by changing the fan speed and closing and opening vents.
Skip the precool
In the winter, it makes sense to run your engine for a few minutes while your heater heats up the interior of your car. The inverse is not true, however. Your AC works best when the engine is running, not idling, so it can’t really make a huge difference until the vehicle is actually moving. You’re just wasting gas and contributing to the climate crisis if you try to precool your car.
Try to prevent the heat
